The state government has provided extra resources for Virginia’s workers while we overcome this pandemic. Please note that because of this situation, the Virginia Employment Commission will waive the one-week waiting period so workers can receive unemployment insurance benefits sooner. The VEC has also expanded the criteria for workers who would qualify for unemployment benefit which includes:
- Workers whose employers reduced or completely stopped operations because of COVID-19.
- Workers who have not obtained paid sick or medical leave through their employer but have been issued a notice to self-quarantine by a medical or public health official.
- Workers who have not obtained paid family leave through their employer but must stay home to care for a sick family member.
