Today marks the beginning of National Teacher Appreciation Week! Our teachers have worked so hard every day to ensure our students have the best education possible.

Today marks the beginning of May. It will soon be about two months since the Governor announced the State of Emergency amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As the Governor stated during the first few press conferences, this situation wouldn’t last a few weeks, but months. This situation is unlike most of us have ever dealt with in our lifetimes.

A few weeks ago, the threat of a huge surge of COVID-19 loomed over us. Such an outcome would have overwhelmed our hospital system, depleted our resources, and hurt so many Virginians’ lives. However because we followed social distancing guidelines and our government undertook important actions such as obtaining multiple shipments of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for our healthcare workers, we have begun flattening the curve.

Starting on April 25th, our country has begun observing National Infant Immunization Week. The greatest minds throughout the world are working day and night to find a vaccine for this new virus. Now more than ever, we must keep everyone in our community, especially the youngest, safe from health issues.

Ramadan Mubarak! For so many Muslim families in the 51st District, Viginia, the country and throughout the world, the Holy Month of Ramadan has begun. This is a time for prayer, happiness, and spiritual renewal. I extend my best wishes to all who are celebrating during this time.

It’s been more than a month since our Governor announced the state of emergency and shut the state down. I know it’s been a very difficult month, but know that everything we’ve done has not been in vain. Social distancing has been playing a huge role in helping to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
