WOODBRIDGE, VA — Today, Delegate Hala Ayala’s campaign for Lieutenant Governor announced the endorsement of Arlington County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti. First elected to the Arlington County Board in November 2018, Matt was unanimously elected as Chair of the County Board by his colleagues on January 4, 2021.
“I am proud to endorse Hala Ayala for Lieutenant Governor,” said County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti. “I met Hala when she was first running for the House of Delegates in 2017. Her advocacy for Medicaid expansion based on her own experience fighting for her son made an immediate impression. In 2019, I hosted an event here in Arlington for Hala when she ran for re-election: she is deeply committed to equity, real, hard-working, and inspiring. I endorse her wholeheartedly as the right choice in this election and the right person to move Virginia forward."
“I am so proud to be endorsed by Matt,” said Delegate Ayala. “Matt understands firsthand the power of local government and how important the relationship between county and state government is to serving our communities. I know he will be a trusted partner in the fight for equity and justice as we recover from the COVID-19 Pandemic, and I look forward to working with him as Lieutenant Governor."
Ayala — the first Afro-Latina elected to the General Assembly — serves in leadership of the House Democratic majority as Chief Deputy Whip, where she has helped usher in transformational progress for Virginia, including expanding Medicaid, passing historic criminal justice reforms, and raising teacher pay. She would make history as the first woman elected Lieutenant Governor and the first woman of color elected statewide in Virginia history.
Last week, Delegate Ayala was endorsed by Governor Ralph Northam, Speaker of the House of Delegates Eileen Filler-Corn, House Majority Leader Charniele Herring, EMILY’s List, and Latino Victory Fund. They join dozens of organizations, elected officials, and community leaders from across Virginia in supporting Ayala’s bid for Lieutenant Governor, including former Congressman Jim Moran, State Senator Lionell Spruill, Senator Jeremy McPike, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, House Majority Whip Alfonso Lopez, House Majority Co-Whip Mike Mullin, Appropriations Committee Chair Luke Torian, Transportation Committee Chair Delores McQuinn, Delegates Besty Carr, Danica Roem, Josh Cole, Dawn Adams, Clinton Jenkins, and Kathleen Murphy, and Higher Heights for America, which is dedicated to electing more Black women.
