WOODBRIDGE, VA - Delegate Hala Ayala issued the following statement today on the grand jury’s decision to decline to prosecute the police officers who murdered Breonna Taylor:
“Today’s grand jury decision is both disturbing, yet completely unsurprising, because our justice system too often fails to value Black lives. My heart goes out to the friends and family of Breonna Taylor. She deserves better, and so does our country.
As an Afro-Latina mother, I carry the same fear for my life and my children’s lives because the reality is that we have a broken justice system. It is just exhausting.
The work that we are doing here in the Commonwealth during special session will begin to address the systemic threats to black and brown lives in our justice system, including banning no-knock search warrants. We still have a long way to go — however, I am committed to continuing the fight alongside my Black Caucus colleagues for an equitable justice system for all.”
