WOODBRIDGE, VA — Delegate Hala Ayala released the following statement in commemoration of Equal Pay Day:
“We know that women in our Commonwealth make just 82 cents on the dollar compared to their male, and that gap is even wider for a woman of color like myself. As we commemorate Equal Pay Day--the day that the average women must work in order to earn what the average man earns in the previous year--it is a stark reminder that our fight for gender equality and equity is far from over.
During my time in the House of Delegates, equality and equity has been at the core of the legislation that I introduced and passed, which is why I was proud to Chief Co-Patron and pass the Equality Rights Amendment to finally enshrine gender equality into the United States Constitution.
Every resident in our Commonwealth deserves equal pay for equal work, and as the first female Lieutenant Governor, I will fight to ensure that women are paid equally and are protected under Virginia law.”
