RICHMOND, Va. -- Delegate Hala Ayala (D-51) of Woodbridge today issued the following statement in response to a Republican-controlled subcommittee’s’ killing of a block of resolutions that would have made Virginia the 38th state (and final state needed) to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment:
“Two years ago, House Republicans voted to mark Jan. 22, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, as a day to mourn fetuses. One year ago, House Republicans quietly killed a resolution to change this so-called Day of Tears into a Day of Women. Is anyone shocked that the same people who voted to shame women do not believe in their equality? Eighty-one percent of Virginians support the ERA. We call on Republican leadership to bring the ERA to the floor of the House of Delegates for a full vote.”
The ERA, which already passed the Senate, was voted down this morning before a packed house of supporters by a 4-2 vote in Subcommittee #1 of the Privileges & Elections Committee. It can be revived before the full committee when it meets at 9:30 a.m. on Friday in House Room 3 of the Capitol.
Hala Ayala represents the 51st District in the Virginia House of Delegates, where she is the a chief co-patron of a resolution that would make Virginia the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. She is a cybersecurity specialist and a single mom.
