House Majority Whip Delegate Alfonso Lopez Endorses Delegate Hala Ayala for Lieutenant Governor

WOODBRIDGE, VA — Delegate Hala Ayala’s campaign for Virginia Lieutenant Governor today announced the endorsement of House Majority Whip Delegate Alfonso Lopez. Delegate Lopez is the head of the Latino Caucus in the House of Delegates, and worked closely with Delegate Ayala in her role as Chief Deputy Whip to pass progressive legislation; including marijuana legalization, historic teacher pay raises, and capping insulin costs at $50 per month.

“I am excited to announce my support for Delegate Ayala in her candidacy for Lieutenant Governor,” said Delegate Alfonso Lopez. “I have worked side by side with Hala for the last four years, including two as Chief Deputy Whip, and I have been impressed with her leadership and ability to build bridges both within our own party and across the aisle. She understands the importance of building coalitions to make meaningful policy changes to improve quality of life for all Virginians. I know that Hala will bring this skill set to the Senate and will continue her important work on behalf of working families. I hope you’ll join me in supporting her.”

“I am so proud to receive the endorsement of my colleague and friend Delegate Lopez,” said Delegate Ayala. “Alfonso has been a mentor of mine since I joined the House of Delegates and then as his Chief Deputy in the Democratic Majority. With his leadership, we’ve been able to create real progressive change in our Commonwealth and I look forward to working with him across Chambers in the Senate to continue this work.”

Today’s endorsement demonstrates Ayala’s growing strength in the Democratic primary field. Ayala was also endorsed by Delegate Kathleen Murphy earlier today, and they join a strong coalition of more than 60 organizations, elected officials, and community leaders from across Virginia in supporting Ayala’s bid for Lieutenant Governor, including former Congressman Jim Moran, State Senator Lionell Spruill, Appropriations Committee Chair Luke Torian, Transportation Committee Chair Delores McQuinn, Delegates Danica Roem, Josh Cole, and Clinton Jenkins, 3.14 Action, and Higher Heights for America, which is dedicated to electing more Black women.
