WOODBRIDGE, VA — Delegate Hala Ayala’s campaign for Virginia Lieutenant Governor today announced the endorsement of the Women of Color Coalition, a coalition of women across the nation that support female candidates of color. Delegate Ayala has also been endorsed by EMILY’s List and Higher Heights, two groups dedicated to electing more women to all levels of office.
“I am so honored to receive the endorsement of the Women of Color Coalition," said Delegate Hala Ayala. "We need more organizations like these who uplift women of color and support candidates like me. I look forward to making history with them as the first woman of color to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.”
Women of Color Coalition release the following statement:
“Women of Color Coalition is pleased to announce our formal endorsement of Hala Ayala for Lt. Governor of Virginia. Delegate Ayala has been a proven and effective leader in Virginia's state legislature fighting for policies that better the lives of women of color and their families. Delegate Ayala understands the struggles many working mothers face, and we have no doubt her lived experiences will help keep her connected to everyday Virginians.
Delegate Ayala has kept her campaign promises she made when running for the House of Delegates. From expanding medicaid which provided insurance coverage to over 400,000 Virginians, to voting for the Equal Rights Amendment, raising teacher pay, expanding background checks to keep guns out of dangerous hands, to her continued fight to close the racial disparity gap in the maternal mortality rate as well as paid family and medical leave. We have no doubt, Hala is the right person to help lead Virginia down a new path forward.
This year's election for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia has the opportunity to be a historic one. If elected Hala would be the FIRST Afro-Latina to hold the position, and we have no doubt she would continue to lead and lift women of color and their families.”
Last week, Delegate Ayala was endorsed by Governor Ralph Northam, Speaker of the House of Delegates Eileen Filler-Corn, House Majority Leader Charniele Herring, EMILY’s List, and Latino Victory Fund. They join dozens of organizations, elected officials, and community leaders from across Virginia in supporting Ayala’s bid for Lieutenant Governor, including former Congressman Jim Moran, State Senator Lionell Spruill, Senator Jeremy McPike, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, House Majority Whip Alfonso Lopez, House Majority Co-Whip Mike Mullin, Appropriations Committee Chair Luke Torian, Transportation Committee Chair Delores McQuinn, Delegates Besty Carr, Danica Roem, Josh Cole, Dawn Adams, Clinton Jenkins, and Kathleen Murphy, and Higher Heights for America, which is dedicated to electing more Black women.
